Common Issues

  1. Thermostat display blank; no cooling: (Please proceed in order)
    1. Remove thermostat face from base plate (pull top forward then bottom). Verify no batteries installed. Batteries are not required for operation and are not recommended.
      1. Batteries installed YES?
        1. Verify battery terminal clean of corrosion
          1. If corroded, replace the thermostat with new. 
          2. If not corroded, proceed to 1.b
      2. Batteries installed NO?
        1. Re-mount the thermostat. Proceed to 1.b
    2. Verify circuit breakers are in the ON position
      1. Locate circuit breaker panel.
        1. Locate breakers labeled ‘AHU’ (typically 17*19 or 21*23 for GENTRY Homes).
          1. If breakers are TRIPPED (middle), move to OFF position then ON. IF breaker trips, contact your A/C Tech.
          2. If breakers are OFF, move to ON position. IF breaker trips, contact your A/C Tech.
          3. If breakers are ON, proceed to 1.c
    3. Verify condensate drain is not clogged (EXCLUDES LATITUDES/TUSCANY II - skip to 1.d).
      1. Locate the attic and access it with a ladder.
        1. Locate condensate drain trap (Black-insulated ¾” PVC pipe). Remove ¾” PVC cap. With a flashlight, verify if there is a clog.
          1. If the trap is clogged, proceed to clean with a wet/dry vacuum.
          2. If the trap does not appear to be clogged, verify by pouring approx. one quart of water into the drain.
            1. If water overflows, the drain is clogged further down the line and must be cleared. 
              1. Locate black rubber hose under guest bathroom sink.
              2. With a small bucket and wet/dry vacuum ready, loosen the 5/16” hex screw pipe clamp. Remove black hose by pulling gently yet firmly off the sink drain.
                1. Clean black hose.
                2. Remove sink p-trap assembly and clean.
              3. Re-assemble. Test water flow from upstairs again. If water is still backing up, call your A/C tech.
          3. If the condensate drain has been cleared and water is flowing normally, proceed to 1.d
    4. Electrical troubleshooting (if you are unfamiliar with electricity, SKIP this step and call your A/C tech). 
      1. Ensure all circuit breakers (AHU,ACCU), AHU disconnect, ACCU disconnect are all ON.
        1. Locate thermostat, remove face from base plate. 
          1. Using a multimeter, set to VAC and verify 24VAC between R and C terminals.
            1. 24VAC YES? Replace the thermostat with a new one.
            2. 24VAC NO? Proceed to 1.d.2
        2. Locate AHU. Open panels by removing ¼” hex screws around the perimeter of the cabinet.
          1. Verify 240VAC across L1&L2 terminals.
            1. 240VAC YES? Proceed to 1.d.2.b
            2. 240VAC NO? Check AHU switch integrity. Call your electrician.
          2. Verify 24VAC at output of transformer.
            1. 24VAC YES? Proceed to 1.d.2.c
            2. 24VAC NO? Replace the transformer with a new one.
          3. Turn off power at AHU switch. Locate and remove the safety float switch. Verify continuity.
            1. Continuity YES? Proceed to 1.d.2.d
            2. Continuity NO or SHORT? Replace switch with a new one.
          4. Turn off power at AHU switch. Verify that there are no shorts.
          5. If all steps fail, call your A/C tech.
  2. “There’s water dripping from the pipe from the second floor roof”
    1. Verify condensate drain is not clogged .
      1. Locate the attic and access it with a ladder.
        1. Locate condensate drain trap (Black-insulated ¾” PVC pipe). Remove ¾” PVC cap. With a flashlight, verify if there is a clog.
          1. If the trap is clogged, proceed to clean with a wet/dry vacuum.
          2. If the trap does not appear to be clogged, verify by pouring approx. one quart of water into the drain.
            1. If water overflows, the drain is clogged further down the line and must be cleared. 
              1. Locate black rubber hose under guest bathroom sink.
                1. With a small bucket and wet/dry vacuum ready, loosen the 5/16” hex screw pipe clamp. Remove black hose by pulling gently yet firmly off the sink drain.
                  1. Clean black hose.
                  2. Remove sink p-trap assembly and clean.
                2. Re-assemble. Test water flow from upstairs again. If water is still backing up, call your A/C tech.
                3. If the condensate drain has been cleared and water is flowing normally, but water is still dripping after 12hrs (A/C on), proceed to 2.b
    2. There may be an insulation issue or crack in the condensate pan. Call your A/C tech.
  3. “The outdoor unit turns on, but there is no air coming out of the vents.”
    1. With a ladder or step stool, verify airflow from a supply vent (adjustable louvers).
      1. Is the airflow WEAK? Check the air filter.
      2. Is the airflow NON-EXISTENT? There may be an issue with your indoor fan motor. Check article 4 or call your A/C tech.
  4. “The outdoor unit’s fan spins, but I can’t hear the compressor”
  5. *Typically after heavy rain

    1. Reset control board error codes
      1. Locate circuit breaker panel.
        1. Locate breakers labeled ‘ACCU’ and ‘AHU’.
          1. Turn OFF breakers.
            1. Wait 5-10 min.
          2. Turn ON breakers.
        2. If problem persists, there may be an issue with the control board. Call your A/C tech.
  6. “The outdoor unit doesn’t turn on, but there is air coming out of vents indoor.”
    1. Verify circuit breakers are in the ON position
      1. Locate circuit breaker panel.
        1. Locate breakers labeled ‘ACCU’
          1. If breakers are TRIPPED (middle), move to OFF position then ON. IF breaker trips, contact your A/C Tech.
          2. If breakers are OFF, move to ON position. IF breaker trips, contact your A/C Tech.
          3. If breakers are ON, proceed to 4.b
    2. Verify ACCU (outdoor unit) disconnect is on
      1. Locate disconnect switch next to unit outside.
        1. Verify switch/plug is in the ON position.
          1. If ON, proceed to 4.c
          2. If OFF, turn ON.
            1. If problem persists, proceed to 4.d
    3. Electrical troubleshooting (if you are unfamiliar with electricity, SKIP this step and call your A/C tech). 
      1. Ensure all circuit breakers (AHU,ACCU), AHU disconnect, ACCU disconnect are all ON.
        1. Locate outdoor unit. Remove ‘L’ panel. Remove electrical box cover plate.
          1. Locate LED status display. Refer to legend for code information.
            1. If ‘0’ or flashing ‘C’ (or ’c’), proceed to 4.c.i.2 (leave panel open)
            2. If any other codes, call your A/C tech.
        1. Ensure all circuit breakers (AHU,ACCU), AHU disconnect, ACCU disconnect are all OFF.
          1. Locate and remove dual capacitor. Verify capacitance with label.
            1. GOOD? There may be an issue with the control board. Call your A/C tech.
            2. BAD? Replace the capacitor with a new one.
    1. There may be an issue with the compressor, control board or outdoor fan motor. Please call your A/C tech.
  7. “Everything runs, but the house doesn’t get cool or not as cool as before”
    1. Verify system has been maintained
      1. Check air filter - replace if dirty
      2. Check condenser coil is dirty - wash with water if dirty.
    2. Verify all supply vents are open
    3. System is low on refrigerant or compressor capacity has been reduced. Call your A/C tech.
